Two subsequent World Wars in 2025 and 2044 left humanity in shambles. Nothing was a certainty anymore, centuries-long alliances became forgotten and best friends started to eye each other suspiciously, still remembering the horrors of war. This atmosphere of fear and resentment was used by the United Peace Party of North and South to quickly seize power in Europe, North and Southern America, Australia and parts of Asia. UPPNS promised peace, order and prosperity and it was exactly what they have given to the society - for a price, of course. What was privacy or freedom of speech compared to the relative safety of modern cities and efficient police force? The state controlled every part of its citizens’ lives, smothering creativity, independence and - most importantly - freedom. Life became bleak, bland and boring, with only entertainment being state-approved propaganda. As a result violent crime, such as assault, rape or murder became rampant, despite UPPNS’s best efforts.
However, in 2076 violent crime became almost non-existent, thanks to the young game developer, Disha Patel, and her revolutionary VR multiplayer game UltraViolence. After it’s launching, the game quickly attracted controversy for its’ shocking level of brutality and encouragement of violence. The media stir and numerous protests resulted in almost shutting the game servers down, but multiple petitions and donations helped Patel Industries to stand their ground when faced with opposition. Now it would be difficult to imagine a world without UltraViolence. The number of players grows with each day and those boasting the highest kill counts in the game are revered as gods and live the life of luxury… As long as they continue to promote their sponsors. Patel Industries claimed that their game has no negative impact on its players and statistics seemed to confirm that. Since the launch day of UltraViolence, crime rates in Northern America, Asia and Europe dropped by 24% and in Southern America, Australia and Africa by 36%.
Then the murders happened.
Fifty three people around the globe died in mysterious circumstances after their VR Helmets malfunctioned, resulting in severe brain damage. “Just some unfortunate accidents. Probably flawed batch of Helmets” Patel Industries reassured, while paying the families of victims hefty compensations. In truth, nobody really cared about that, until DeadMan revealed themselves for the first time. They were a person, or maybe whole group of players hidden deep inside the world of UltraViolence. Somehow they gained the ability to kill not only a virtual avatar, but also the real person behind it. At the beginning Patel Industries tried to hush the whole ordeal, but pretending that DeadMan doesn’t exists backfired when more people turned up dead. Sadly, despite the joint efforts of Patel Industries and police force, murderer remained at large, somehow impossible to track. Federal agencies decided to place their agents inside the game in order to smoke the killer out.
On May 17th 2079 the world is hours away from the first UltraViolence Tournament. Only one individual amongst millions can rose to greatness and win the UltraPrize. Rumor has it that DeadMan plans to use the commotion to begin the biggest killing spree in the history of humankind and show oppressive government their middle finger.
As the fates of four people who otherwise would never met interweave in the world of UltraViolence, the time is running out. Will those strangers help to unmask mysterious serial killer or their own selfish goals will get in the way?
