Prepare yourselves for an epic tale.
Deep in the darkest corner of the multiverse stands the Citadel Cavitius, the unholy lair of Vecna, the God of Being a Total Dick. Over the centuries hundreds of famous heroes have assaulted Cavitius. All of them have failed, having met horrible ends at the claws, teeth and tentacles of the horrible monsters that serve as Vecna’s thralls.
But even Vecna’s thralls need a hobby. That’s why when the remains of the last batch of would-be saviors is cleaned up and all the traps reset, the various monstrosities gather in sub-basement 3A to eat pretzels, drink beer, and play their ongoing campaign of 5th Edition Houses and Humans, the multiverse’s most popular mundane pen & paper RPG. There, under the careful guidance of the Bronze Lich Osterneth (the citadel’s most experienced Housemaster), monsters can thrill at the exotic challenges of marriage counseling, potty-training toddlers, and trying to get the regional sales manager position before that brown-noser Ted gets it.
But things take an unexpected turn when one of Vecna’s dickish pranks transports the monsters to the mystical realm of Alexandria Virginia, where they find themselves possessing the lives of their human characters. Now the monsters only have one chance to return to Cavitius: by surviving a week in their mundane roles and completing the most challenging of all human rituals, the annual April 15th filing of taxes.
