In an ancient world ripe with conflict, The Tamlin Archives are a beacon of knowledge across the continent. The world is ravaged by the warring of mages whose powers can tear holes in space and time. In Tamlin, magic is forbidden within the walls of the city. Tamlin is a fortress, surrounded by high walls and soldiers on every street. These soldiers are placed with the intention of creating safety, but many feel constricted by the eyes that seem to be watching them wherever they go. Some wonder if they are really there to protect the people or something else entirely.
The Tamlin Archives are the largest source of knowledge in the world. The massive library has countless halls and levels with scrolls and tomes packed into every crevice. Scholars near and far flock to the city to conduct research and an education at Tamlin’s academy assures students a successful career in their area of study. Thus, The Archives is open day and night to meet the needs of both scholars and students.
In the dark hours of the night, a collection of patrons burn the midnight oil in the archives. The Guard has recently finished their training and find it hard to keep their eyes open as they take their first assignment. The scribe’s eyes hurt from staring at and copying one of the many scrolls to meet the deadline of their employer. The student sleeps over a pile of books, giving up on their assignment due in the morning. The Scholar converses with The Archivist, attempting to get access to the deeper levels of the Archives where the oldest tomes are held. She refuses them access to the restricted section before leaving down one of the halls towards the center of the library.
They are all interrupted by the shaking of the earth, books falling off shelves, and debris falling from the ceiling.
