Reopening for next round of submissions
Dimensions. Parallel to our world run a thousand other dimensions. And in those reside demons. They can be called by many names - monsters, spirits, creatures - but the fact remains they are not human. When five scientists discovered their existence for the first time it started a dangerous research into studying them, capturing them and finally experimenting on them. But it did not end there. The demons had extraordinary abilities. Not just what appeared to be magic but also increased strength, stamina and sensory abilities.
Imagine if humans could have the same…
So it began. The long series of human experiments - injecting demon blood into people as a form of enhancement; but the demon DNA in humans did not just boost their strength, it changed them. It seemed the demons resided inside the host now and weaker people were quickly consumed and taken over, turning into crude beasts. Many simply lost their mind and died. But some people were strong and fought back. They learnt to control the demons and they were trained by the scientists to cover the organization’s crimes. Their extraordinary skills made them ideal soldiers to not just carry out their plans of acquiring more people but they were also used by many other people in the shadows who were sponsors to the organization.
As they continued the experiments, the organisation grew in power and it created a large number of facilities to hide their “operatives” and train them. To society these people were dead and nobody knew what tortures they underwent in these isolated facilities. After many years of suffering under the organization, a few of them fought back. Most rebellions were crushed but something changed this time.
Led by a group of courageous heroes who grew to control their demons and work with them - the operatives began their war to overthrow the organisation. It took years of hard work - fighting against the organization, other operatives, their inner demons, a society they could no longer fit into and even the real demons of the other world. There were many losses and betrayals along the way but strong alliances were formed too and in the end they succeeded in destroying everything, including the scientists who had started this all.
All the escaped operatives blended back into society. The exact details of what unfolded in the end was only known to the few core heroes who witnessed the demise of the scientists. A generation down, the demonic powers were inherited by their children and minior incidents resurfaced. But they were quickly stopped this time and as years passed, the stories and the demonic DNA influence began to fade.
A 100 years had passed since then and it was enough time for everything to be buried and the world was finally at peace again.
“ Yes!” The bespectacled man flashed the light into the dark corner.
Buried under the rubble was a pitch black mass. On closer inspection it was clear that it had a humanoid form.
“I knew they were real!” cried out the man as he looked back and asked his men to shift the rubble away “Once I get this to the lab, I can finally have the proof they so wanted to fund my research!”
He knew this was only the beginning. Once they believed him, he would have everything he needed to keep searching.
“It must be real then….” he muttered in an almost feverish manner “Immortality….. I will find the one that can create life itself…”
A few years later people started disappearing again. Mostly those who would not be missed. Then came a slew of terrorist-like attacks in public places. A few ended up dead in each case but some eyewitnesses claimed they saw these “dead” people being dragged away in the confusion. This amounted to nothing of course, because when everything cleared and the police arrived there always was a body.
It had been so long that people had forgotten that the exact same events had happened a century ago. Unfortunately, as the world and its technology had grown so had its apathy. Nobody cared anymore.
You wouldn’t have cared either. Until you were caught in it. The last thing you remember is your eyes getting blurried by the smoke and collapsing to the ground. Your entire body is strangely numb with pain and as you blackout you feel the sharp tip of a needle in your chest.
It’s now your turn
