It occupies a space in the middle of nowhere, a sprawling two story hotel surrounded on all sides by uninhabited desert. It’s never quite as noticeable during the day as it is at night – at night it seems more vibrant, more welcoming. Its lights serve as a beacon for miles around, a welcome sign of civilization amid all the emptiness. It offers respite for those weary of the long hours they’ve spent travelling, and succor for those who are striving to leave behind the more unpleasant aspects of their lives.
Curiosity drives many to pull into the parking lot, because the hotel is not listed on any maps, on any apps, on the Internet, anywhere. It looks clean and well maintained, and the sign out front that reads “Hotel California” also lists all the things you’d expect to find at any decent hotel, with the inclusion of the “luxury outdoor Mariposa Pool.” It’s as good a place as any to stop for a night, to rest eyes and muscles made tired and stiff by long hours of driving.
Desperation is what drives others to stop here – desperation and fear, a potent duo that leads people to seek their own private bolt-holes, little-known places to lie low for a day or two in hopes that what they’re running from will grow tired of searching. The price of a room is fair, room service even more so, and Management is sympathetic to those in plight. For a reasonable cost, visitors can experience a five star stay in a hotel that, by all accounts, doesn’t exist.
Hotel California is a good place to rest and an even better place to hide. Once within its walls, guests will know comfort and luxury. Staff will provide almost anything they desire. They can relax in the tastefully appointed lounge, get a meal in the attached fine-dining establishment or wander out onto the patio at the back, where the beautiful pool awaits.
Most guests of Hotel California leave completely satisfied but also bewildered as to how such a luxury establishment has gone largely unnoticed by the world at large. There’s no way for them to leave a review, no way to recommend other than by word of mouth. They will always remember the night they found the lovely hotel on the side of an empty highway in the middle of the desert.
Some guests, though – some guests have a very different experience. Some guests attract more attention from Management than usual. Some guests aren’t permitted to leave when they want to. Some guests will never leave.
Which one are you?

This is meant to be a horror/thriller/mystery game and as such will be darker in tone. Due to subject matter, this game is marked as mature (18 +). I’m looking for players committed to what will likely become a long haul adventure, who are open to exploring the inner workings of their characters. Gameplay will be more focused on story than on cards.
This takes place in a modern setting. While filling out your application, please include the following: 1) Your character’s background. I would like detail, as their past will come into play throughout the game; 2) What events led your character to finding the hotel, and their reasons for stopping; 3) Any item you would like to have as an asset in the game.
I welcome and encourage custom cards! I’d love to have a good mix of different character types.
Please be sure to read the rules and info for applicants! Thanks!
