Over two years ago, I played a game and fell in love with a couple of the characters, as well as the setting and idea. Things happened, as things do, and it fell apart.
So I’d like to carry on a bit of the story here, with new ideas and new characters.
Harbor House.A place for young men who need “Safe Harbor”. The idea was put together by some very willing and enthusiastic philanthropists who saw the potential in deinstitutionalising the disenfranchised young men who were clogging up the system and not reaping the benefits.
Maybe they came here from prison, maybe from an asylum… they were judged to be capable of living in a semi-independent state, supported by regular staff. It’s all very modern, very inspiring, all driven by a belief in equality and opportunity. Like Eleanor Roosevelt suggested. They were human. They deserved a chance.
All of the young men came with their own challenges, and they were by no means free to do as they pleased. Many of them still require medication and to be under supervision at certain times and with their activities. The goal at the end is that they can live a meaningful existence, feel that they are members of a community.
The characters should be young men between the age of 18-30, they have been in one kind of institution or another for a certain amount of time and now are free to live in a supported living environment. I expect them to not necessarily get on with everyone, that’s fine.
I would like to play with the elements of friendship and sexuality, as well as the feeling of acceptance and understanding that they might find in this odd, forced little family.
No more than 5 players. As some of the characters may have mental illness, I would like to remind players to address these features as part of a character and not as a gimmick to attach to them. All such things should be played in seriousness and with respect.
The game is set in 1951 and setting accuracy will be important to a certain extent.
