Somewhere in France, 1796 AD
A young creature struggles and coughs, scrabbling to the surface, out of their own grave.
Her long fire-kissed hair weighs her down as she claws through the six feet of solid earth that might as well be twenty miles of bedrock to her feeble, starving limbs. But that same hunger spurs her every movement. For while the scurrying, crawling, slithering creatures of the earth keep her from meeting another death… the lack of a true meal keeps her from wondering why she hasn’t suffocated yet… or how long it has even been since she awoke in that coffin. It had taken all her strength to break out of it and yet she found more… more to dig… to climb.
Ever to climb… always up, she hoped. At least… it seemed to get colder the further she went, which meant water… yes it had to. It had to.
It just had to.
Emerging from the earth some time later to the night sky… a strange man approaches…
“Bienvenue enfant, dans ta nouvelle vie née de la mort,” he says, as he kneels close to her.
Washington D.C., Present Day
An orange man wearing a cheap toupee and an expensive suit bleats on and on over the television for several long seconds before the device is switched off by an unseen hand.
“Ah… young ones…. Duskborn childer… I suppose you are all wondering,” a friendly tone pouring out of cold dead lips and throat as effortlessly as wine from an open cask, “Why you are in my home now… and still alive despite certain… transgressions… that is because there is a service I believe all of you are uniquely suited to fulfilling for me, for all Kindred. Get results and you shall be well rewarded. Fail me. Betray me. And there will be consequences far worse than what you were expecting tonight.”
“So, shall we begin?”
Welcome, Duskborn to your new existence as the runts, the mistakes trying to scrape by night by night There are more details below, but you should know first and foremost that this is a game based on Vampire: The Masquerade, and specifically on the 5th edition. Loosely, broadly speaking anyway. It is impossible to faithfully adapt all of the mechanics to storium, and I will be making changes to established continuity where I believe it best serves the narrative at hand.
And that narrative?
You are not fully blooded (har har) vampires. You are what are known as Thin Bloods. You are barely considered vampires, almost none of the nifty powers, far fewer advantages beyond the base benefits for joining the hemovore club. but the basic premise is that because you are more human-like vampires, you are better suited to infiltrate a human intelligence agency that has been causing problems for Kindred world-wide… and get in a position to do something about it.
A good way to think of this story is the very bloodiest and terrifying kind of political spy thriller. Where any mistake, even a momentary one, can have dire consequences for you and everyone in your new community. Think somewhere between Manchurian Candidate and Naoki Urasawa’s Monster with a healthy dose of Interview with the Vampire, The People’s History of the Vampire Uprising, True Blood (at its most political and vampiric), and other tales of horror mixed in.
Our story, as you may have gathered, takes place in Washington DC, and as such, most of you are probably DC natives, or at the furthest, are from a nearby town or city. All characters should physically seem to be between the ages of 20 and 55.

ONE LAST NOTE, this story is designed to be friendly to newbies and no prior knowledge of any version of Vampire the Masquerade is needed to join in.
In fact, considering you’re the outcast “mistakes”, ignorance of vampires and the setting here works well to get you in character… just understand that all characters in the know have various reasons to keep you in the dark as much as they can…
Or at the very least, have varying degrees of patience.
