Although well kept and relatively clean the motel does shows signs of wear and tear. The sickly yellowish paint on the outside walls is beginning to peel in places and the plastic flowers from the hanging baskets are full of dust and discoloured by the long exposure to the sun. Inside things are not looking better; furniture looks tatty and the carpets were showing bald patches in some places.
Max returned to his rented accommodation for a short nap, a shower and a change
of clothes before starting his shift. But he was too excited to sleep and turn on the TV.
The local news channel broadcasted a report from the last night attack.

… all the neighbourhood is shocked by this vicious attack and..

the voice of new anchor keep going on, but Max stops listening. Instead his attention was drawn to the square on the top right corner, where some footage were on repeat. And there it was: a shadowy person in the background, hidden among more familiar faces and shown over and over again on the screen. Something about his demeanour was familiar to Max.

But how could it be … after all these years …

A car door slams as Ellie exits her vehicle. The Honda Accord is a little dented, but well loved. It was reliable, and that was what mattered to her. Reliability.

She strides up the sidewalk and out of reflex, checks her surroundings. Ellie faces one of the ground floor windows and brushes her short cropped, natural Black hair as her eyes check the parking lot behind her.

Her mentor had made it clear that being complacent could get you killed. Ellie was satisfied that she wasn’t leading any one - or anything - to her hopefully new buddy.

She walked to Max’s front door.

Knock, Knock.

“Max? My name’s Ellie. Midori told me where you were. I hope thats okay.”

Jake groaned, the light from outside capturing his eyes. He rolled over, ‘How long have I slept?’
His eyes darted to the alarm clock on his small nightstand. The green light reflected back to him, 9:50 am. He pushed himself up, grabbing the remote besides him and powering the TV on.
“Breaking news.” The voice of a woman broke through. Jake’s eyes were peeled to the TV with these words. When the station finished telling the story of what happened Jake’s mouth gashed. He picked the remote and rewinding the video, and jumped up, rushing for paper and pen.
He recorded a few notes from the report, though it wasn’t much. To find this person he needed more, a lot more. Pausing for a second he placed his hand on his head.
‘This can’t be happening. It is all so similar.”
He stood up, quickly rummaging for an outfit, and heading out the door.
Flashes of the past ran through his head.
His mother.
The blood.
There was no denying that this was done by the same filthy beast. The one he was too much of a coward to do something against.

“Max?” Ellie stated with concern to the door. Nobody came to the door. She frowned and checked her watch. It wasn’t too early.

She stepped down to Max’s next door neighbor’s door and knocked politely. She hated bothering people - especially strangers. Yet when people are being attacked by possible vampires, its best to check up on one another. Perhaps he was working - or perhaps he was in trouble.

“Hello? Sorry to bother you, but have you seen your neighbor?” Ellie called though the door.

“He’s not answering the door. With whats’ happening… with an attack… I’m afraid.”

Ellie admitted earnestly.

The bang on the door brought Jake back into this world. He jumped, a shiver up his spine as he heard it. Before answering the door, he checked his back pocket pulling out what was in there. Staring at the bill for a second, he looked back up at the door, cursing under his breath. He folded the bill up, shoving it into his pocket. Maybe it wasn’t the landlord, but then of course who else would it be?
He took a deep breath, quietly stepping towards the door. Looking through the small peep whole, he saw the girl.
“Thank god.”
He smiled, opening the door, though the woman’s voice spoke before he fully opened the door.
“Hello.” He eyed the girl up and down. “Yea I understand, the attack’s are scary, but I am sorry to say that I have not seen my neighbor recently.” Or at all He wanted to say but kept his mouth shut. “Is there anything I can help you with? Maybe I can help find him?” Jake regretted the words as he said them.

“Hey.” Ellie said as she looked the man over.
“Yeah, thanks. That would be great.”

“Max as looking into the attack on our neighbor. Have you heard about it? She’s in critical care right now.

“My names Ellie.” Ellie extended her hand to the man.

“Ellie Sampson. Truth is, I’ve never met Max in person. “

That was hard to explain. Hopefully, the offer for help wouldn’t dry up. She could use the help. She had thought Max was the most like her, new to the area but eager to help. She hadn’t reached out to Lidyana as yet, but that was her next step.

“I can get the other investigator. Maybe we could get together to look for him, since she knows him. What do you think?”

Jake further out listened to Ellie, his eyes going wide. He would of never guessed it in a million years.
He placed his hand out grabbing hers and giving a firm shake. “ I’m Jake. Nice to meet you.”
He let go letting her hand, letting it slip away from hers. “ I understand. “ He fiddled with his hands. “Yea, I can help you find him. Maybe he went to the scene to investigate more? I was about to go there myself to be honest.”

Find out what happened with Max

Jake and Ellie went next door to Max’s place for one final check. When she knocked, there was still no answer so Ellie looked through the windows. The curtains were drawn so she had a good view of the room. The placed was in disarray with upturned furniture, a broken TV in a corner and deep grooves on the wall like someone tried to claw his way out. It looked like there had been a fight in there, but strangely the door was locked and Max’s car was in the motel’s parking lot.

Willow waited behind the wheel of her car for what seems like forever. She was still too fresh to know how to use her newly acquired, heightened senses to find out what was going on inside the building and was starting to get inpatient. The tinted glass of the windows protected her for the harsh light of the midday sun. At last, her targets got out and walked briskly toward their car, departing with haste.
Willow could sniff the air and sensed that one of her target was a werewolf. The smell was so strong it was intoxicating. She had to use all her self control not to jump out of the car and confront them right there in the broad daylight. Soon after, Jillian got in the passenger seat of the front of the car and her two cronies in the back.

“I’m afraid we lost them. I think someone tip them up about us because the guys got suspicious about us.” said Jillian.

Willow clench her teeth and her grip on the wheel tighten.
Damn, incompetents. If only I can do these things myself , but she swallow her frustration
and said in surprising calm voice

“I guess I will have to follow them at a safe distance as to not arouse even more suspicions”

“Oh no…” Ellie steps back so Jake can look through the window.
“He’s been attacked.”

She makes the assumption based on their line of work. “We should call the police. I’m guessing he’s been abducted. We should figure out by who. And contact the others…”

Ellie sends a text to Lidyana.
Ellie here. Are you OK? We are checking on Max and the room is trashed. Deep grooves on the wall like someone tried to claw their way out. His car is still here. Should we come to you?

“I messaged Lidyana,” She says to Jake. “Whats your phone number?” She hands him her phone to enter a new contact.

“I think we should stick together.”

Jake eyed the window. He shook his head. “No this can’t be happening.” He placed his hand to his forehead, peering into the room the evidence said it all. There was no denying the untidiness of the room. He took his phone out of his back pocket. “I’m on it.” Jake stepped away from Ellie for a moment, dialing the number.
He waited for the ringing to stop and then spoke to the woman on the phone giving the detail.
He hung up the phone, turning back to Ellie. “They should be here in a few.”
Jake shrugged. “Is Lidyana the other investigator you were talking about? And my number is (803)456-6632. “

Lydiana’s phone vibrated for a second time this late morning. A message from Ellie:

Ellie here. Are you OK? We are checking on Max and the room is trashed. Deep grooves on the wall like someone tried to claw their way out. His car is still here. Should we come to you?

She quickly typed into her phone a replay.

To Ellie:
“Just about to go out to go to Agatha store. Let’s meet there. We will get to the bottom of this.”

To Agatha:
“On my way and I will bring back up :). Do not worry!”

She grabbed her oversized raincoat, big sunglasses and car keys making a dash for the door. It was cloudy this morning so she could manage a quick drive to Agata’s store.
Once there she was in for a nasty surprise. The store had been broken into. The door was smashed a shelf was upturned spilling all his contents of books and bottles all over the floor. It looked like someone had been in a hurry to find something, but what?
