You are the children of the Thane of Barrenhall. Acosta Trevellian rules her lands with a brilliantly sharp mind and more than a few secrets from her stronghold, Joahna Woods. Barrenhall is a matriarchy, where the title is passed down from mother to daughter. The society of the land is vastly different from many of the surrounding nations, including the lands of the King to the West in Amberliegh.
In the South, your closest neighbours are the island of Sharde, where rebellious nobles continue to resist the rule of the Bellantry family, currently sitting the throne and ruling over all the nations. The Shardish have never forgiven an acient slight and bear grudges in their dark, rainy island.
To the West, Amberliegh where the king rules. The Bellantry line insists on one noble of each generation from the most notable families marrying into thier line, to solidify allegiances.
South West, there is Byden. The Pirate nation ruled by the Vaughn family. The brothers come from a long line of gangsters who control a the waters between their collection of islands and Sharde. Constantly a threat to the coastline, the Vaughn family are notorious.
South South West is Tredian, the richest of all the nations, supplying all with gold and jewels. A strangely secluded people, Straywinter Hollow is their stronghold, deep under a mountain. Ruled by the Howe family.
To the North there are the men and women of Gallowhill, a determinedly stalwart and honest people who fight constantly to defend their land from barbarians. Ruled by the Frost family.
And then there are the Barrs. The strange little island far to the West is of little concern to the Thane, their people are half savage, sheep farmers and nothing more.
This game is only going to take a few players, I will probably cut off at four maximum. Each player should design a character who is related to the Thane and has their own motivations. The game is a politcal, social sort of thing involving family interactions and deals with the outside world.
For inspiration, the setting is low fantasy, medieval levels of technology and no real proof of magic existing, though people believe in it.
Barrenhall’s attitudes are very different to the outside world. Men are not really given any power to rule and are usually expected to look beautiful and amuse the ladies. They are often given to ‘maly’ persuits like hunting to occupy their time. The women lead in all aspects including their army which prides itself on the quality of its archers particularly.
The character cards are guides only, see what you come up with and I’ve left a lot of room for you to be inventive!
