In Hariston, Alabama everyone knows the names Ford and Monette. You barely even have to mention them and someone will tell you something about one side or the other.
For the most part, the town are fairly one sided on the matter. Bodie Ford is an upstanding man about town, a local employer and active member of the district school board. He has been a pillar of the community for most of his life, bringing up his family in the way of the church and standing tall as a man to be relied on.
On the other hand, there’s Tucker Monette.
The Monette’s are poor, Tucker’s on his third wife, who’s half his age and he’s had more than his fair share of trouble with the law over the years. But he’s never backed down. And some people can respect that.
No one knows how it all got started, more than forty years have gone by since the whole thing began. All the kids know is if you ever ask, you’re sure to get a hiding for your trouble. It doesn’t really matter anymore. All that matters is the hate.
It’s hard to point and finger and say who’s to blame in something that runs into history, but the town has seen its fair share of blood over the years and it doesn’t look like abating any time soon. Bodie has the law on his side, but that don’t mean much when the chips are down…
