A wonderful fact to reflect upon, that every human creature is constituted to be that profound secret and mystery to every other. A solemn consideration, when I enter a great city by night, that every one of those darkly clustered houses encloses its own secret; that every room in every one of them encloses its own secret; that every beating heart in the hundreds of thousands of breasts there, is, in some of its imaginings, a secret to the heart nearest it!
A Tale of Two Cities - Charles Dickens
This is the tale of two cities. Two cities which exist side by side. Two cities which are intertwined; sometimes overlapping, sometimes separate.
There’s London, the city of millions, firmly rooted in reality, where history is a mere memory and the focus is on the future. And there’s Londinium, the city of thousands, floating between memory and magic, desperately clinging to dreams and history.
There are places where these cities mirror and others where they contrast. And scattered throughout these cities are passageways from one to the other.
Londinium was just one city once. Then, after Boudica razed the original Roman settlement, Londinium was rebuilt. And then there were two places called Londinium.
One was the newly rebuilt city, the other was in the dreams and memories of the survivors. These memories and dreams lingered. And there, at the crossroads between hard reality and the realms of dream, memory, magic, faerie, and death, a new city sprung into being.
As one Londinium grew, was partly destroyed, rebuilt, and eventually evolved into modern London, Londinium grew along with it. For with each building which disappeared from London and each dream and memory of London, Londinium was added to.
In these two cities the characters live. Some are true citizens of Londinium and rarely venture forth into London. Others fully live in both cities and have both magical and mundane lives. And yet others have just wandered into Londinium and are still trying to navigate their way around, while still being tied to their lives in London.
This story will draw these characters into a web of mystery, intrigue, and politics. They have to survive these two conflicting worlds by their wits, knowledge, skills, and magical abilities.
