A Lifting the Veil Story
Mundane was, as its namesake claims, an average suburban community. Nothing of historical importance ever even passed through its outer limits. Founded in 1908, the largest event ever held was the century celebration where everyone brought their boats out onto Mundane lake and watched a movie on the water. Though it was a small community tucked away out of sight from most of the world, even left off most U.S. city maps, it had a richer population which led to more commodities being available. The high school was so well-funded that every student is given a laptop and even the under-attended robotics club has enough resources to make college equivalent machines and the art class has a 3-d printer. The local Mundane movie theater even has heated seats that recline. By all accounts, it is a hidden cache of luxurious pleasures to anyone who happens to stumble upon it.
That is until the disappearance of Olivia Roberts in March of 2024. What appeared to be one of the brightest and most sociable of the juniors attending Mundane High School that year, having developed a social media app to be used on students’ devices that allowed for them to communicate while being monitored by school staffing. Its name was simply Mundane Commons. She had been seventeen at the time of her disappearance and there has been zero progress in her investigation despite it happening about five months ago. At least, that was until reports of students receiving messages from her on The Commons app. Not a single word within the messages was cohesive and the IT department chalked it up to a glitch in the system. Then the power went out and the loudspeakers began playing a girl’s screams on loop for the entirety of the outage. It was at that point that the school decided to take action and reach out to anyone who would help them.
First they contacted the church, who dismissed the entire situation as a technological fluke rather than a serious possession. Next they reached out to a supposed mystic who simply burnt incense while speaking what the school assumed was Latin. When neither worked, they got desperate and posted on a reddit thread named r/paranormal. While they got plenty of responses of how to maybe handle the situation, only one user offered to come. Though, it would take him a week to arrive. So-called Professor Jasper Valkyrie was coming from a case he was working on in Texas. Given the school’s growing sense of desperation and the town’s wish to return to its roots of normalcy, they decided to take the chance on the out-of-state stranger.
The story starts on the first day of the new school year, September 4th, 2024.
