I am writing a historical fantasy novel, and it is going so well that I am avoiding it by being on Storium again.

Principles

  • Good writing should be understandable. “Difficult” words are not at odds with this goal; making a reader think (or use a dictionary) isn’t the end of the world.
  • Character and plot are intertwined. Character actions drive the plot; plot events develop the characters.
  • Metaphors should illuminate rather than obscure. If your poetic imagery makes it harder for the reader to follow what’s going on in a scene, take it out.
  • Remove anything that you only wrote to show off how clever you are. People are generally less impressed by that sort of thing than you expect them to be.
  • Don’t follow writing advice unless it resonates with you. Write the book/story/post you want to write.
