In the Year 2350 A.D the debate of about the necessity of faith and belief was put on the center stage of the Scientific Community. Scientists argued for it, others against that the very belief in the unseen is illogical and unnecessary for modern expansion.
In an experiment to end the debate, Scientists tore the veil of reality to seek out Heaven. But they got it wrong. Heaven wasn’t where they calculated it to be, they found emptiness.
From that moment on, childlike wonder, and belief in the unseen became obscure and obsolete. A world of hedonistic materialism bloomed from the ashes of dreams.
However, there was something pulling the strings behind the scenes. The Gloom. An anomalous extraterrestrial threat that slipped through the breach of reality. A predator that physiologically harms its prey before devouring them. It feeds on emotions, ambitions, and dreams leaving all mortals it touches empty apathetic husks. Having been drawn to the emotional and mental anguish created by the Scientific Faith debate.
Not much is known about the Gloom even by the Phantoms: The folk legends, myths, and urban legends forgotten by the social mind. They never died, but instead they have been repurposed. They are now the unseen protectors and warriors that combat the Gloom. The unseen sentinels of an unbelieving world.
Can they force The Gloom to retreat back through the tear of reality or will all of humanity become apathetical husks in its wake?
