When an ancient trod shatters, whole freeholds are cut off from the Dreaming and a Nocker inventor vanishes somewhere beyond the break. Her optimistic son builds the Trodmender, an imperfect machine capable of reconnecting the scattered road. Joined by a Pooka carrying its first missing fragment, he sets out to mend the trod, find his mother, and discover why someone destroyed the road deliberately.
