“The Northfall King is Dead! The Northfall King is Dead!”
The long-feared words of the town criers echoed through the streets of Kingsbridge and other capital cities across the land. Those four words set in motion a chain of events that would shape the kingdom for the next 100 years. The Dark Times had arrived.
Northfall, the richest kingdom in the land, had been ruled for centuries by the strong Angevin line of kings. Alas, that line ended with those four faithful words that cold winter morning. King Alfred IV had died, heir less and alone, leaving the Kingdom of Northfall and its vast riches ripe for the picking.
The vacuum that was created saw kings, nobles, and everyday men pulled into the darkness, as powers vied for control of the throne. Decades of warfare followed, with no side able to draw a clear victory. The once steadfast people of Northfall were reduced to shadows of their former selves; forced to live under the rule of whichever power was in control of their town after the latest series of skirmishes.
It was in this darkest of hours that rumors of a “True King”, a secret heir to not only the Northfall throne, but to the throne of all of the Realm. It was out of these rumors that The Resistance was formed. A secretive group, organized to help fight back, and now to track down this “True King”. Thus restoring the throne, and the world, to its former greatness.
As with all matters of this sort, there were those that sought to destroy the Resistance’s efforts, to impersonate the True King, or to put themselves in power by any means necessary.
The decades-long War for Northfall had also opened up avenues for the evils of the world to creep back in. The Church had other things occupying its clergy. No more were cities concerned with catching “witches” and “warlocks”. Demons once again walked the roads at night. Ghostly forms haunted the woods. Whispers that the Dark Lords were taking the opportunity to reclaim the world of men for themselves also rifted through the realm. Screams in the night, beasts acting strangely, and tales of forbidden magics long-thought extinguished being practiced once more permeated the tranquility of the realm.
War of the Kings immerses the players into this chaotic, medieval (sword and sorcery style) world filled with dangers, secret plots, and war on many fronts. The players will fill the role of a member of a Resistance member tasked with trying to find and restore the True King. Along the way, they will meet all manner of challenges and plots, some will even graver consequences than the restoration of the Crown.
