It was worth saying “tragedy strikes” on local news, but still a drunk driver short of making national headlines.
That is, until tragedy started making its way down the superlatives.
Most Dedicated hemmorhaged after a sports injury. Most Popular picked up botulism and stopped breathing. Best Dressed found the wrong kind of mushrooms one night and didn’t make it out of the woods. Most Athletic collapsed in the middle of a track meet and died en route to the hospital.
Five dead high schoolers in as many weeks, four of them among a close-knit group of friends with bright prospects.
Media outlets, private investigators, attorneys, and conspiracy chasers smelled blood and swarmed Almonte to capitalize on the wealthy planned community’s grief. Meanwhile, forensics experts, law enforcement officials, and pathologists roamed the halls alongside students, opening and closing the school enough to push graduation back to July.
Naturally, there are those who believe the timing was beyond coincidence. Some suspect meticulous foul play, others call it a sign of the apocalypse, and one YouTube user explained how the Illuminati were definitely getting back at their parents in a PowerPoint.
One morning in June, a group of strangers will unwittingly stumble upon the peeling edge of a deeper Truth.
