The galaxy is full of wonders. Even Ikarus, as distant as it is from the Core, has its share of fine art and cutting-edge tech. Any traveller, however discerning, can find something to enjoy in the elegant yet vibrant society on the planet’s three moons.
Life on the surface of Ikarus is quite another matter.
Much of the planet is a barely habitable desert, blasted with punishing furnace heat by day and gripped by unforgiving icy cold by night. No one would live in such a place at all if not for one thing: it’s extremely rich in mineral deposits.
Mining and refinement are big business here. Someone is making a huge profit, that’s for sure, but the workers and residents don’t see much of it. Life for most is a daily struggle for survival; the only difference is in the degree of desperation. Some scrape a decent living, while others… well, they live in places like Ashirek’s Low Town.
Not everyone in Low Town is a miner or a criminal, but they are all one missed paycheck away from destitution and disaster. Hard lives breed hard hearts, or that’s what they say, but some people are all too willing to help others, even here.
Sometimes you have to ask the question, though: how much can you afford to give? What if it wasn’t time or money on the line, but your freedom—or worse?
Would you risk your life to help a total stranger?
