First, the world went to hell—and then hell froze over.
In the slick streets and glass towers of a corporate-owned Ice Age, the rich go on ‘ice-bath retreats’ while the poor freeze in favelas and tenements. As for those who can’t afford even that squalor… well, they live and die by the charity of others.
And now even that charity is under threat.
Compassion isn’t profitable. If the homeless would only work, no one would need shelters. Never mind that it’s not that simple, and some of you really can’t. A civilised society would provide for you. But this is the V.S.E., so you’re on your own.
The underground streets are kept clear of rough sleepers, and living outside would kill you quickly. Lifeline, the non-profit that runs homeless shelters all over the city, is well-named. Without their staff and donors, you’d probably be dead. Though, thanks to the spectre of corporate greed, you may well be dead soon anyway.
As long as no one wanted the space, you were safe. But now someone does, and Lifeline can’t afford to outbid them—and once it closes, you’ll have nowhere to go.
It’s hard to know what you can do about it. But someone has to do something…
