“The gates of Hell are open night and day / Smooth the descent, and easy is the way / But to return, and view the cheerful skies / In this the task and mighty labor lies.” – Virgil
The year is 2036. The world has changed fairly dramatically since you’ve been gone. You led a terrible life, or you made one simple–but important–mistake; were you a genuinely bad person or were you simply misguided? After you died, you were sent to Hell, where you’ve spent the last… well, you aren’t quite sure how many years it’s been. Things went poorly for you at first, naturally. But over time, you’ve managed to get in someone’s good graces somehow. Which is why you’ve been selected for a special assignment. Something that will send you back to Earth. Whether this is ultimately a good thing or a bad thing is yet to be discovered.
A number of damned souls plotted an escape recently, and to much surprise, they succeeded. Some were in positions that allowed them to manipulate the laws of the crown and others were mere nobodies–muscle, lookouts, patsies. Altogether, these are the worst of the worst. The most vicious and violent creatures to ever walk the Earth–and now they’ve returned there. Whether they’re in hiding or back to their old ways, there’s only one thing to be done: they must be returned to Hell by any means necessary.
You’ve been sent to an Earth you’re no longer familiar with, to hunt down and retrieve these souls. You’ve been given promises–if you do a good job, eternity in the pits may go a bit better for you. If you fail, well… you can’t even quite imagine what will be done with you if you fail.
(When creating your character, please describe what they were like in life, what crimes they committed that sent them to Hell, what era they lived in, etc.
Also, describe what they’ve done in Hell. What torments have they faced, what tasks have they been asked to take on, etc. What has life in Hell done to your character? What have they learned? What have they forgotten? Why might they have been chosen for this opportunity?
How does your character plan to handle being out in the world again? They know they’ll be hunting down very dangerous creatures; how do they plan on accomplishing this?
To get an idea of what you’re facing, this game will be something of a blend between Blade Runner, William Gibson’s books, the Sandman Slim novels, and the TV shows “Brimstone” and “Reaper.” [If you missed the latter two, you’re missing out!])
