Hundreds of years ago, when humanity had yet to step beyond the confines of Earth, the entire species was nearly exterminated from an invasion by the terrifying, vicious alien scourge known as the Oni. The planet was saved thanks to the heroism of Project ZODIAC, a program based out of Japan which developed twelve extremely advanced mechanical combat armatures capable of besting the Oni. Though the war was long and terrible, the dozen young people chosen to pilot the ZODIAC mecha succeeded in vanquishing the Oni threat once and for all, saving humankind from the greatest danger it had ever known.
What followed was a golden age for mankind. The nations of Earth unified behind a new world government led by Gorobei Takano, director of Project ZODIAC. In the years that followed this new ZODIAC Directorate became a galactic power as human colonists spread to hundreds of worlds beyond Earth, each one led and protected by the power of the Directorate.
Though technology has advanced considerably since the Oni War, the ZODIAC mecha remain the galaxy’s ultimate weapons of war. Developed in part using Oni technology, all efforts to replicate the mecha have failed, resulting only in inferior imitations. The Directorate continues to recruit young people across the galaxy to pilot these machines, using them to fight threats to humanity wherever they appear.
With such fearsome weapons on the Directorate’s side, humanity has enjoyed a period of unprecedented peace and unity. This is what the Directorate teaches, at least. Yet now there are whispers that the end of this age is approaching. There is unrest across the Directorate, discontent threatening to turn to unrest. Worse, there are rumors of unknown dangers at the periphery of Directorate space. Could it be that the Oni are not truly as extinct as is believed?
