The Smith’s Hearth had once been, locals would agree, the heart and soul of the town. Run by two natural hosts, Robert ‘Rob’ and Maguerite ‘Maggie’ Smith, the pub was open every day of the week, almost 24/7 it seemed to its loyal guests who always came first.
Rob and Maggie’s children could be seen doing their homework at a table in the corner in the afternoons before things got busy, they knew the regulars and were always good for a laugh. The whole family lived for the pub.
Even when Maggie became sick, things carried on as normal, with her insisting on pulling her weight in spite of the cancer that was spreading rapidly. By this time, the children were grown up, no longer to be seen around the pub after the youngest had disappeared rather suddenly. At least one of the four returned to help.
When Maggie died, things started going downhill fast… in a way that couldn’t be disguised from the customers. Rob lost his temper more and more often, former regulars started frequenting other establishments where a good time was guaranteed. It was a big scandal, of course, but hardly a surprise, when Rob was led away in handcuffs one morning… there were rumours about tax fraud… or handling of stolen goods… no one quite knew, but everyone had a piece of speculation to contribute to the hearsay.
The distraught child was in way over their head and decided to reach out to their siblings for help. If they wanted to rescue the family pub, keep it afloat until their father’s innocence was inevitably proven, they’d all have to get involved.
With four rather different siblings, making decisions - from the choice of music to the business side of things - was surely going to be a challenge…
