Mysterious Stranger
(
Furare)
You can leave the Island, but the Island never really leaves you.
Or so the saying goes in these parts. And there might be something in that; the sleepy town of Iselaw is exactly the sort of place one might expect to sink into a person’s soul. Still, only those who’ve shrugged off her quiet embrace know the truth of it.
People like you.
You were born and raised in Iselaw, an Islander like any other. Most of the villagers have no complaints about the slow pace of life or their isolation from the rest of the world—but for some reason you decided to build your future somewhere else, across the narrow sea. It happens from time to time. Island life isn’t for everyone.
Maybe you always meant to return someday. Maybe even you couldn’t bring yourself to miss the two hundredth anniversary of the town’s founding. But, whatever your motivation, when you reach the ferry dock you find that you’re not alone.
The Island brings her deserters back in the end.
Though when the ferry doesn’t come, and you learn that no one’s heard from the other side in days, you have to wonder if the Island called you here to save her.
What’s happening in Iselaw? And is there anything you can do to stop it?

Host’s rules: none specified
- Write in the third person past tense.
- This is a “yes, and…” environment. Build on what others have written, and don’t be afraid to make things up. As long as it fits the outcome, it should be fine.
- Ask before writing more than minor actions or dialogue for other PCs.
- Feel free to write for NPCs or create new ones if you need to. Ask before writing for any NPC who has a strong connection to another player’s character.
- If you prefer, you can ask me (or another player) to write an NPC for you.
- Be prepared to be flexible about “what my character would do”.
- Don’t feel hemmed in by challenges; you can make cardless moves if you like.
- Character conflict is welcome as long as it doesn’t become the focus of the game.
- Keep the game moving. If you write a collab post, try to finish it within a week.
- Be proactive. Look for reasons to post, not excuses not to.
Info for invitees and applicants: none specified
This is an atmospheric low fantasy horror game. It has Lovecraftian undertones, but as I’m not very familiar with the canon these are only stylistic influences.
I’m looking for 4 players who are prepared to make at least one move every week.
You can use the existing cards or create your own. Your Nature should show why the character left the Island, while your Subplot should be why they chose to come back. Use of art on custom cards is encouraged but not required.
Avatars should be fantasy-style art or photographs taken from fantasy or historical media. If you are not using one, please include a description in the bio section.
Think about why your character might have left the island, how long they’ve been away, and what they’ve been doing since. You don’t have to put all the answers in your bio—it’s fine to keep a bit of mystery—but you should know what they are.
Your character should be 18 or older now but can have left the Island at any age.
All of the people here are human; there are no “fantasy races”. Magic exists but is very rare, so it’s unlikely that any of you would know more than a few paltry tricks. High-ranking followers of the gods (or others who are especially favoured) may be able to perform ‘miracles’, but these are only minor magic as well.
There is greater and more terrible power in the world than humans are capable of mastering. Expect to see such horrors being used against you…

Violence, abduction, death, incomprehensible horrors.
Please no rape or sexual abuse (especially of children) in character backstories. It might make for a powerful story, but it’s not something I feel qualified to handle.
Bigotry of any kind is unacceptable. Please don’t bring it to this game.
