Long live the Queen!
And the Queen has lived long, indeed. The year is 1601, and for neigh on seventy years Armonia has enjoyed a golden age of peace and prosperity under the reign of the world-renowned Queen Margaret III.
Her success as Monarch was by no means a sure outcome, as she ascended to the Throne at the tender age of ten in a time of great conflict and change. A Council of Regents, handpicked by her predecessor before his death, had ruled the land until the age of her majority. These Regents ruled sometimes wisely, sometimes unwisely, sometimes with ambitious and deadly purposes of their own – but nevertheless, somehow, had kept Armonia together until the Queen could rule in her own right, and during a time when religious conflict, international intrigue, social unrest, and rival claimants to the throne had battered at Armonia’s foundations.
And what a Queen she had turned out to be! Now, as Margaret approaches her eightieth birthday, Armonia is strong, wealthy, a beacon of light and prosperity to the world. But as is so often the case, trouble brews just below the surface, and our aging Queen may no longer be up to the task of rule. As her mind declines into dotage, Her Majesty has realized the future of Armonia cannot rest on her shoulders alone.
And thus she must turn to the solution her father once did, so many years ago. A Council of Regents, carefully selected, to see the realm through her declining age, eventual death, and the all-important and dangerous matter of succession. But she knows firsthand that anyone granted such powers to save Armonia can also destroy it…
