Queen Muna X of Yalay has not made many friends during her reign. Others of her name have carried gentler epithets. Muna The Softheart, Muna Brighthands, and even Daft Nana have kind words written of them in the histories. Not so for The Zealot Queen. Though her devotion to the powers of the earth were encouraged as a child, by the time she took the throne, she had been stoked into fanaticism by her religious advisor. To hear some tell of it, Queen Muna has put the worship of old magics above the wellbeing of her people, going so far as to ban the growth of particular crops or remove residents of certain lands entirely to protect holy grounds.
Even so, she might at least have kept the protection of the conservative elite had she not married her foreign consort. Her King Consort, Reko the Exile, did not have even the decency to hail from a provable lineage. The strange, pale king came from a land of ice past the mountains and across the sea. He learned no more than ceremonial phrases to speak with his adopted people. Instead, the reclusive king cares for Princess Thulile and shadows his Queen.
Isolated by her own actions, Queen Muna has found herself surrounded by enemies on all sides, on this most holy of nights. Tonight, at the Festival of Rebirth, erupts a plot on the royal family’s lives, along with an ancient magic with potentially devastating consequences.
