The year is 2714. Crime is rampant within the United Terran Hegemony. Capital punishment has been outlawed for centuries, and expensive orbital prisons are now filled to capacity, bursting with the worst of humanity’s offenders. Looking for a solution to this costly problem, humanity’s leaders turned to a very old concept for inspiration: the penal colony.
During the golden age of European exploration and colonization, prisoners were sent to settle less hospitable territories in Australia, Georgia, and other places far from the old world. Now, the Hegemony intends to use prisoners to serve a similar purpose. The worst of the worst will be sent to colonize new worlds, those the survey teams have deemed fit for human habitation, but whose inhospitable conditions have made them frightening or unappealing to voluntary colonists.
To test this program, the Hegemony has assembled a small group of offenders to settle a world on the outer reaches of Hegemony space. They will be dropped from orbit with only the bare minimum of supplies and equipment necessary for survival. What wonders and horrors await them in their new home? Is this a chance for redemption and a new life, or are they just exchanging one grim cage for another?
