You saw the story in the Police Gazette. A painter had gone mad and slaughtered his family. The lurid illustrations include a photograph of “the painting that drove the artist mad.” It is a jungle scene splattered with blood and with strange runes written across the top. Something has drawn you to Carrington College in the small-town New England where this took place. Perhaps it is the runes which echo symbols seen on some very old and rare occult manuscripts. Perhaps it is the horrific crime that took place in a peaceful college town. Perhaps it is an interest in the psychology of the artist. In any case, you have arrived in Carrington, New Hampshire on a cold winter day.
It is December 1933. President Roosevelt has taken office and enacted a number of reforms, but the United States is still in the grip of the Great Depression. There is unease over Adolph Hitler’s rise to power in Germany, famine in Russia, and Japan has conquered much of China. At least Prohibition has ended.
I envision this game as a short, fast paced 1930s pulp novel – filled with action, interesting characters, exotic locations, and maybe a few plot holes. I’d like to see it run 6-8 weeks but that could change. I’m looking for no more than five characters.
