In this downtrodden city, carved up by vampires, werewolves, and wizards, everyone gets dirty. Whatever you want, you’ve got to go through someone to get it. That means choosing friends and that means making enemies. Just hope you get out of this life without becoming a ghost — because no one wants to linger in this city — Vandenburg — that long.
Meet Victor Castle. He’s an old werewolf, long since used to being the main protective force of lycanthropes all over Vandenburg. There’s been peace between lycanthropes and vampires for nigh on twenty years under his rule, all thanks to a pact he, Alistair, and The Drake have made. However, werewolves young and old are disappearing…
Meet Alistair Wright-Smith. The oldest vampire in Vandenburg, Alistair is looking to retire from the burden of eternal youth. The only problem? His second-in-command wants to brutally exterminate all lycanthropes and destroy everything Alistair has worked for. On top of all this, vampires are vanishing, and random civilians are being Turned.
Meet The Drake. She’s in charge of all wizards in the state, and she’s terrifying. They say she’s an actual dragon. It was Victor who approached her to instill a pact — which was then known as the Meeting of Worlds, and the pact the “Promise of Peace” — and The Drake, after consideration, agreed. Her people are tradition-bound, and it has been difficult to start them on a new path.
And, finally, meet Edgar Crease, private detective. The rumors are that he washed out of wizard school and is now working for Vandenburg’s monster population to pay the rent. He’s noticed that there is something going wrong, but he believes that with his past and connection to Vandenburg, he’s simply too close to the problem. His conclusion? Find outside help.
There are other players in this game of death and magic — Isolde Jaeger, rich and influential human; Francine Dumont, intrepid reporter; Jean Farrow, experienced and fierce hunter; John Hirsch, a wizard hiding some dark secrets — and all of them want something from someone.
