This story will begin in an alternate-history Great Britain, in the fictional city of Kirkwall, England – the cultural and technological hub of the world. The year is 1874. For the most part, British history has remained the same. The only exception is that magic is real, has always been real, and has been pretty much hidden away since the Middle Ages, when the Church drove most mages into hiding. The year was 1844 when magic woke again in the Americas, when the Apache shaman Taklishim led thousands of his people in a Ghost Dance, an ancient magical ritual that brought spirits back to the land of the living. This Ghost Dance was intended to drive white settlers out of Apache lands.
The Ghost Dance coincided with a number of other supernatural phenomenon across the globe, helping to bring a huge amount of magical energy back into the world. Since then, the wizardly ways have picked up steam once more. Races such as the elves, dwarves, and goblins have re-emerged as well.
Elves are largely Irish and British natives, woodland folk with an intrinsic connection to nature. They have skin ranging from green to blue, and their hair and eyes can be nearly any shade. They have leaf-shaped ears, large almond eyes, and lithe figures. Most of them have some magical ability.
Dwarves come from the former Norse and Germanic lands. Their skin is the color of soot and coal, and their hair is usually brown, black, white, or stark red. They tend to be excellent craftsmen, and stand between 3 and a half and 4 and a half feet tall. All dwarves grow beards, but female dwarves tend to have more soft, downy facial hair that is not nearly as thick as the males.
Goblins are ubiquitous creatures with no real homeland. They grow to a height of no more than three feet, have long noses, long, floppy ears, and blue, red, green, orange, or grey skin. Goblins have a not-unearned reputation for being quick, stealthy, and sticky-fingered.
Since the Ghost Dance, people have learned to unite magic and machine to create clockwork contraptions that would have been impossible otherwise. Airships, steam-powered robots called Automata, and countless other technological marvels have revolutionized industry and technology the world over.
Adventure, intrigue, and romance combine in a thrilling world of steam power and magical engines! This deck features varied heroes, hungry dinosaurs, and a glorious airship.
