Alright Ladies welcome to the Lazarus Corporation Ice Mines on Europa, let’s get this over with. The name’s Howie Fisk and I’m here to make sure all of you don’t die. No, I didn’t stop for questions and I wasn’t planning on it. But, since I can see our friend in the front isn’t going to stop his hand waving I’ll see if I can get a few out of the way.
One: Yes, I lost both of my legs in a painful and traumatic accident in the mines. Thanks for bringing it up.
Two: No, I don’t have prosthetics. Don’t trust them and the corporations that make em.
Three: Yes, I do work for one of those corps. Whydja think I don’t trust them?
Four: No, you may not have a different orientation officer. I’m all there is at Lazarus and truth be told my nearly forty percent trainee survival rate is one of the best in the business.
Five: No, you may not leave after hearing that more than half of you are gonna die. Next ship leaves here in a near a month when the hold is full, but you’ll have to pay to leave on it and you wouldn’t be here if you could afford it anyhow.
Now, where was I? Ah, welcome to Europa. Yada yada yada. Let’s lay down a few ground rules and then it’s time for your training videos. The research lab is off limits and so is anywhere that has a restricted sign like this one here. One of the scientists asks you to do something, you do it no questions asked. Ok, seen enough of your ugly faces for one day. Off to the videos for you.
Notes:
The intro is just setting the tone/location.
Characters don’t have to be miners, but they will need to be on the base for some reason. Could be scientists, security, miners, or a corporate lackey.
Other facts:
Humans still have found no sign of intelligent life… yet
Travel is confined to the solar system with travel times from the inner planets (mars inward) to the outer planets taking anywhere from a week (for a fast ship burning at 1G or more) to a month or so for more sedate craft (read: freighters)
Tech has had it’s ups and downs. Space travel has pretty much been ironed out. Real AI is still ‘just a few years away’. Bio Tech and Cybernetics can do pretty much whatever you imagine if you have the connections or the money.
Corporations aren’t people any more, they’ve become countries. There are still a few countries that haven’t become obsolete, but only by becoming corporations in all but name. Most folks don’t have patriotism, they have corporate pride. Makes a funny sort of sense; when you were born on a corporate owned station, issued a corporate ID instead of a birth certificate why would you care about your ancestry?
