King Wendel was an affable, likable, all around good sort of king, the kind who shows up for ceremonies, shares wealth with his subjects and never tries too hard to actually rule.
Wendel never wanted to be king, it was all a bit of political jockeying. Really the person who ruled Hybrandt was Queen Lorelai, but technically a daughter couldn’t rule in her own name. Technically Wendel was the rightful king, but really his family sold him and their money to the royal line for political favors.
Everyone thought Wendel kind but harmless, and when he lay on his deathbed after a hunting accident, the most people were saying was that it was a shame that he hadn’t given Lorelai a child. Wendel had the last laugh though, quite literally, as his dying chuckle was to tell the chamberlain ‘a secret’. There was an heir to the throne, it just wasn’t Lorelai’s.
Now, the word has gotten out, there is an heir, and people of opportunity and secrets come together in the capital of Rosewall to try and find them.
