Once you were children together. With bright smiles, large dreams, and the ranks of nobility upon your banners. The High King then was known to be quite mad, but you were children and laughed rather than take the dour faces of your parents seriously. Besides, you were friends and companions of his son, Darrius, a noble youth who had grand ideas of peace and justice. So when his father was slain and a new tyrant took control, as friends and companions in your youthful days, barely bridging adulthood, you took to your steeds with sword, bow, and axe and swathed a bloody path to the capital.
And there you gave him a crown.
Darrius was a great friend and even greater ally. He offered you the lands of your fathers, after nearly nine years at war. But you were young adults then, and had no interest in settling into the rank of lord or lady when you had spent the best years bathed in blood. You were heroes, and so you would remain, wherever you traveled throughout the land. Some of you became dragon slayers, some of you became king savers, some of you broke ancient curses and fought dire lich demons. Some of you became leaders of honourable men.
But all of you became heroes.
And then Karliah began to darken. You were leagues away, fighting your own fights, saving those who needed rescuing. It had been nearly ten years since you had returned home, and when the whispers of Karliah’s most fierce and reckless tyrant fell upon your ears, you could nearly feel your heart break when they said his name in hushed tones: Darrius.
The man who had fought tooth and nail to crown had betrayed you. And had named you his enemy. His tenuous hold on the continent made her names hunted. Creatures came from the darkness for you. Once you were heroes. Now you were hunted vagabonds, forced to hide and flee from those you once showed kindness. All of you were named villain. All of you would fall, one by one, either brought to Darrius’ fortress or made to suffer under whichever king’s banner you were found in.
At least, that is your fate. Unless you sever the chains that bind you and arise victorious.
The Fall of Karliah is the story of a group of heroes, once friends, lovers, and brothers at arm, who take up the call after they are named the enemy by their once best friend and companion, Darrius. You have no seen hide nor hair of each other in nearly ten years, but parted on decent terms (or not, as you decide). Will you rise up and overthrow Darrius or be lost to the rising darkness in Karliah?
Players will be expected to have secrets for their character, relationships with one another (including past history they will create before the game starts), and have high ambition but not necessarily the best impulse control. They should be heavily flawed heroes. Think about a world that was once light where darkness has impregnated the thoughts of everyone and is slowly rotting away what is good. The game will be highly interpersonal, as well obvious combat and puzzle solving. I prefer inter-character drama to external focused drama, so just a heads up. IE: This isn’t your typical dungeon crawl. The setting will borrow from Shadows of Esteren, if you’re familiar.
Dark, gritty fantasy. NSFW, as I would like there to be violence, gore, sexual content, and mature themes. You can define what “heroes” are, but generally your public image was a hero of the people. Feel free to create your own cards for natures as well, but I want your relationship to Darrius to be somewhere.
