Freddy told you he was 15 the day he opened The New York Times just to see the headline:
Gays Hit NY Cops
Followed by the lines: “Homosexuals took to the streets in New York City last weekend and joined the revolution. A two day battle resulted after New York City Pigs busted a popular bar, the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village”
He was telling you about the day he came out of the closet, five years later.
“I lost my teenage years,” he shrugged, “But for most of us it takes a lot longer…”
It was New York, It was 1982, It was Thanksgiving dinner at Roger and Paul. Everyone was there, well, everyone who matters, anyway. It was like family, only better. You were happy.
But now the festivities were over, and on February 6, 1983, your heart sunk when you opened the New York Times Magazine and came across:
A New Disease’s Deadly Odyssey
“Medical detectives are calling it the century’s most virulent epidemic. It is as relentless as leukemia, as contagious as hepatitis, and its cause has eluded researchers for more than two years. Acquired immune deficiency syndrome, or AIDS, was first seen in homosexual men - particularly those who were promiscuous - but it has now struck so many different groups that its course cannot be predicted.”
It was a scary article. You tried not to think about it. It is the kind of thing that only happens to others. No one you know was sick, they don’t even had a cold.
Until Easter.
As always, Roger and Paul were hosting a wonderful dinner. Only Freddy was late this time. No one knows why. He didn’t say anything. But some heard a rumor.
“Freddy got it.”
You’ll play a group of friends dealing with the fact that one of you was just diagnosed with AIDS. Now they have to learn how to deal with this new and frightening situation. Are they afraid? How do they respond to prejudices, how does it affect their personal lives? Does it change way they see the world? Their dreams?
