2208 - Earth’s population has hit 12 billion.
While technological advancements have allowed humanity to stretch ever dwindling resources further then previously imagined, the almost total automation of many occupations has left billions with nothing to do but eat, sleep, and enjoy whatever mass amusements the governments provide to keep the riots to a minimum. Those pressing for a practical solution to over-population butt heads with moralists who consider their plans barbaric.
A possible solution is found with the successful creation of jump drive technology. Several Earth-like planets had already been discovered in earlier decades, but now there was a way to reach them without a generation ship, though the jump could only be done once before a new engine core was needed.
Who would get to colonize the new worlds? How should they be divided? After much debate behind closed doors, an agreement was reached: The Diaspora Initiative.
Known to the general public as the Extra-Solar Colonization Initiative, or E-SCI, groups of 500 would be selected at random from across all nations and peoples, given basic construction and survival gear, and dropped off at different plots across the new worlds to form colonies as they see fit. Some are willing volunteers, most were ‘encouraged’ with promises that their families would be taken care of if they went.
Those that survive and prosper would claim the land as their own. Those that didn’t…well…it isn’t like there’s a shortage of humans in the universe.
