For many years, the area affected by the Chernobyl disaster lay quiet, inhabited only by the increasingly mutated wildlife and the settlers who stubbornly refused to leave their homes.
Lately, though, things have changed. Perimeters have been fenced and are now patrolled. Checkpoints have appeared at all the roads leading in, and military vehicles rumble through at night.
Other things are happening, too. Other, stranger things. People are dying and no one will talk about it. Bodies are found, mauled and drained of blood. Guards shift uneasily at their posts, and soldiers swig from hidden flasks before going on night patrol.
When questioned, government officials claim that the containment measures are there for public safety. It’s to keep the curious out, they say. But that was never a problem before, so why start now?
