They say every town has one. The creepy house. The run down place that looks like it never really fit in with the rest of the neighborhood. The one that seems like it’s in a prime spot, but for some reason no one has lived there in decades. The kind of house that kids love to tell stories about. They’ll say a witch lives there. They’ll say it’s haunted. They’ll claim another kid snuck inside once, and he never came back out.
The house at the end of Engel Lane is one of those houses. There’s no other house quite like it in the sleepy little American town of Cold Grove. The house is a sprawling gothic Victorian manor with peeling black paint and a rusted iron fence, both covered in creeping ivy. Nobody’s lived there as long as anyone can remember, and everyone has a story about why. Some say a satanic cult held their rituals there. Others, that the wealthy owner went mad and murdered his family. Then there are the people who claim, improbably, that the house predates the town, that the first settlers just found it there, already abandoned, and built the town around it.
At Cold Grove High, the town’s only high school, the students have a long standing tradition. At the start of summer, the recent graduates are supposed to do something dangerous to prove their bravery. The scarier, the better. Last year, the participating members of the graduating class jumped off the cliff over the pond at the bottom of the old quarry. The year before that, they raced to climb to the top of the old sycamore tree on the old mill hilltop, making the climb on a moonless night without so much as a flashlight. One group of this year’s graduates has decided to up the stakes by undertaking a truly terrifying adventure: spending the night in the house at the end of Engel Lane.
It’s all a bit of a joke, of course. An excuse to sneak out and party. No one seriously believes the stories about the house. It’s just a creepy run down old building. Ghosts, witches, and devils aren’t real. They’re just tales meant to scare little kids. No truth to them at all.
