2015: superhero culture is as ingrained as the Big Mac. The vigilante community, especially on the West Coast, had become lethargic with their duties, taking advantage of their near-immune status as cultural icons; turning in their duties for all-night fiestas and drug-fueled implosions. At the centre of it all, the Californian Cowls: the top dogs–former agents of justice, now careless rogues downing martinis in the Hollywood Hills. Superheroism was now a fashion piece, a social statement, and a declaration of debauchery.
Who are the Californian Cowls?
Formed in the birth of mass superheroism during the turn of the millennium, the Cowls were quick to exploit the public’s awareness, catapulting themselves to crimefighting stardom. They were the A-list. Fresh vigilantes were desperate to fight by their sides, flying in from all corners of the globe, from New York to Japan, they all wanted a bite.
Led by the ineffable charisma of Captain Justice, the Californian Cowls fought crime and delivered the law, and no nemesis could defeat them. From their headquarters (aptly named Justice Villa) overlooking the stretching Los Angeles, they conducted their wild vigilantism.
Until that is, fame held more importance than their desire to shield the citizens of La La Land and the world. The Justice Villa became a sight of drugs, sex and non-stop carousing.
As a top bill member of the Cowls, you live at the centre of this lifestyle: unbridled, unchecked freedom at your fingertips, your costume a stunning reminder of your potential, and your blindness of it.
Hi, potential players, welcome to the Californian Cowls. You may be wondering about the genre we’ll be going for. Good question.
A comic drama might be the closest description. I’ve picked up inspirations from wells such as Marvel’s X-Statix‘s irreverent regard for superheroism, and Bojack Horseman‘s celebrity despair and their hopeless search for happiness.
We are all nothing but broken superheroes.
