So long as there has been life there have been stories and fables of the other. Of helpful spirits, of playful watchers of the sea, of creatures too fearsome to behold. But they are no mere fable, as we found out when one hundred years ago the being known as Dracula demanded his kind an audience on the world stage.
They were being hunted, he said, and were dying. The creatures of the dark, of the mists, would soon be extinct. Naturally such sentience and eloquence was enough to rouse the attention of world leaders and a solution was proposed by a Dr. Abraham Van Helsing which we now refer to as the Buren Act.
They would be accorded segregated rights while examinations were underway to determine whether it was safe to have these other beings be reintegrated. Their own housing, employment, and benefits carefully supervised by carefully chosen specialists. All for the safety of mankind, of course.
And how could Dracula protest? It was either these terms or the extinction of the fae, the werekin, the hundreds of thousands of others who lived along the other side of the world.
Fast forward to 2018, and not very much has changed. Society is slowly coming to accept the existence of these “Buren”, but they are still met with suspicion, scorn and sometimes outright persecution.
You will be playing inhabitants of a Buren housing complex, either one of the many Buren themselves, one of their Hellsing minders, or a (required) human whose paperwork got mixed up and had them sent here. Of course the apartment complex was built over a graveyard which was dug into the heart of a leyline, so strange things happen all the time. Try to enjoy your lives and make do, whether it’s through romance, friendships, or saving the world from squids from outer space.
