For decades there were warnings that the world’s bee populations were in trouble. Despite concerns expressed by experts of how dropping Bombus numbers could be detrimental to the environment, the average person paid no attention. After all, how important could a little buzzing insect really be in the big scheme of things? Then, one day, it seemed as if all the bees in the world were suddenly gone. Crop productions rapidly declined. Flower species died off. Human nutrition took a nose dive.
It has been years since the last bee was seen. The planet is a barren wasteland compared to its former glory; where once green grass and colorful blooming gardens grew now sprawls desolate, dusty dirt. Plants are considered luxury items (as pollination must be done by hand or using expensive machines) and organic vegetables in stores are non-existent. Humanity soldiers on, but malnutrition has led to a massive increase in serious medical conditions. The future does not look great.
Then, one day, a child playing in what once was a park is caught off-guard by the unexpected: an insect zips by him and lands on a nearby rock. Startled, he manages to snap a photo with his cellphone before the creature takes flight again and disappears into the distance. The child shows the photo to his parents that night, certain of what he has spotted. His parents, upon reviewing the picture, agree and quickly tell the local news. By the next morning the headline story on all online publications is splashed across the sites in bold letters: BUMBLE BEE SPOTTED.
This reported sighting has a major impact on everyone. People flock to the park where the child spotted the insect in hopes of seeing it for themselves. Conversations start as to where it has come from, where it could have gone, and more importantly, whether there are more just like it somewhere.
The news of the bumble bee has significance to you as well. You and your fellow players are members of a New Age Movement known as The Followers of Pfloros. Under the guidance of your leader, Cleric Rhoda Dendron, your small group worships the Great Plant Lord Pfloros and his floral teachings. Cleric Rhoda has preached about how Pfloros will come one day from his dark realm to the human realm and cleanse the world so that it can be renewed, but Pfloros will need your assistance crossing planes by way of a recently translated summoning spell. One of the key components to this powerful invocation is the joints from the six legs of a bee- with the absence of these insects, it seemed impossible for Pfloros to ever be called forth. Hope is renewed with this confirmed sighting.
“We must capture this bee,” Cleric Rhoda commands of you, “the Great Plant Lord Pfloros is anxious to come to us, his loyal and devoted seedlings. He has waited long enough. He should not be kept waiting any longer.”
It is clear what your mission is- as a team you set off to the park where everyone else has gathered intent on locating the bumble bee for your own purposes. Will you be able to find the insect before others? What competition (or opposition) will you encounter along the way? Will Great Plant Lord Pfloros finally be welcomed or will his summoning once more be denied?
