Over the past 18 years, the Firth galaxy, including its 7 water planets and the amphibious beings who reside on them, have noticed the introduction of an unexpected and unidentifiable freezing agent closing in from deep space. After many missions to grab samples of the matter were conducted, the scientists and researchers of the outermost planet, Tarpon, have deduced that they have 1 year and 4 months until the entire planet is frozen solid and, therefore, uninhabitable. Before this is to happen, the leaders of Tarpon devised a plan to move their entire civilization west to their neighboring planet, Ammo, during their alignment anniversary. However, Ammo doesn’t seem to want the burden of taking in refugees; they don’t have the water space to host them, their food supplies would be shot, and they fear civil war would inevitably happen. Because of this, Ammo has agreed to take only half of Tarpon’s inhabitants, suggesting that the 5th planet in alignment, Abyssal, take the rest. Abyssal and Tarpon have the same track around their star, meaning they are in near-perfect alignment most of the year—sending communities over would take no waiting time at all. However, Abyssal has not been in contact with any of Firth’s planets for the past decade. There is no time to ask for permission, so here’s the plan: send half of Tarpon’s residents to Ammo during their alignment anniversary, send the other half to Abyssal and risk their entrance being assumed an invasion, and finally, figure out what that freezing agent is before it gets to the other planets and sends all of Firth’s people to their star.
Just before the exodus phase of Tarpon officially begins, a small team has been tasked to stay and endure the “Freezing.” They have been equipped with the technology to keep in contact and report any new findings while they are alive…though no one has acknowledged that this team will likely die from staying behind, they all believe it will happen.
It is the final ship’s last day for departure. Everyone else has already left days before and is currently on their way to their destinations. So far, there have been no reported malfunctions with the water suits or ships, and the trajectory is still accurate. It is time to leave Tarpon. The task force that has been left behind bids them farewell and proceeds to organize their food supply, heat sources, bunker accommodations, and technologies.
