When they say “five year mission,” they mean it about the five years. No going home, no calling home, until time’s up – assuming you’re still around by then.
Space exploration hasn’t turned out quite the way the science fiction writers pictured it.
FTL travel is possible, but there’s nothing in our neighborhood worth the costs. Sentient aliens? They must have been around once, because someone (or something) built the network of Gates that allows travel across distances that would take years with conventional FTL. Apparently they found our corner of space boring too, because the Centauri Gate is the only one near enough to Earth to be useful. The good stuff, it seems, is all on the other side of the galaxy, where the majority of the Gates are located. Heck, the Centauri gate only opens every five years. Whatever our predecessors were looking for out in the big beyond, they didn’t find it here.
So what does all this have to do with you?
You’re beyond the gate. The Diana Hua, a small, privately backed ship, went through the ‘gate about a month ago. So far, you’ve found nothing of interest other than a few half-mad prospectors who’ve been out here for more than one tour. Maybe that’s all you’ll ever run into. Maybe you’ll strike gold and find mineral riches. Hell, maybe you’ll find the holy grail, a habitable planet. No matter what, though, you’re out here for five years. No way home, no way back. You’re stuck here and you’re stuck together. Let’s see what happens, shall we?
