As soon as space travel became available to the general public, criminals used it to escape to places where the law couldn’t touch them. The discovery of other alien species (and alien judicial systems) only complicated matters. It wasn’t long before the Galactic Black Market Trade sprung up; to meet it, the Galactic Bounty Hunter Federation was formed.
It’s been two hundred years since that event, and you are one of the bounty hunters aboard the starship Space Trash. You and your crewmates sail from planet to planet, hunting down whatever unfortunate soul has a big enough bounty on their head, then cashing in and hoping you have enough for a good meal. It’s not much of a life, but it’s just about all you’ve ever known, and that ain’t gonna change anytime soon.
