Osiris–a gas giant composed of mostly oxygen and water vapor–orbits twin stars: the fiery orange Fjuren, and cold, blue Isis. No one remembers how humanity came to live in the skies above Osiris–and to tell the truth, nobody really cares. What little humanity remains lives cramped together in large floating cities called demesnes, or far-flung outposts known as far-holds. They are either citizens, or slaves. The Eternal Emperor claims all as his subjects, and to defy his will is death.
Those few who choose to live beyond the reach of the Eternal Emperor live in the so-called free-holds, communities cobbled together from the floating hulks of old junks, frigates, and captured imperial warships. What they need, they take. Their leader, an escaped slave named Arterus, will stop at nothing to see his brothers in bonds freed, the capital city of Edonia liberated from the Emperor’s rule, and the Eternal Emperor dead on his throne.
The story begins aboard the prison ship Erissel, en route to the prison colony of Karol Es. Aboard the Erissel are six prisoners, one platoon of soldiers, the ship’s crew, and a small coterie of Magi. The ship carries its own standard compliment of AI for basic ship’s functions, as well as any AI belonging to the passengers or crew.
