The year is 2025 The world we once knew is gone, left in it’s place is land left ruined by years of conflict. It started with the failing of the economy, fossil fuels were being depleted rapidly. Countries became desperate and began to turn on each other for the last remaining resources. Governments failed their citizens. The wealthy and powerful hoarded supplies in heavily fortified compounds. the common man was left out in the wastes.
Gateway city is name given by the survivors for St Louis. Cities became unsafe since there were more resources there was more savagery near them. People began to gather in small farming scavenging communities. Washington Missouri is one such farming community, where most of the players hail from. Every summer when the days are long they send teams of urban explorers to brave the dangers of the city to bring back as much equipment and supplies as they can Carry.
Runs are limited to protect Washington from raiders and other hazards if their settlement is discovered. They take the Runners and make several separate groups that way if a group is shut out other groups taking different routes may have a chance.
There is a sort of competition that comes from the run, mostly bragging rights but also it is not uncommon for the people on the run to take some of the loot for themselves. The more they bring back the more they can hide what they are taking for themselves. The team that gets the most useful supplies secures Premium rations from the community and if they were not full citizens before the run they do gain permanent citizenship. Others take the opportunity to search Gateway City which without a group would be certain suicide

leadership: central council of elders plus a mayor (current mayor Zeke McCray) that handles day to day decision making.

Outer city is just outside the citizen housing. These are sections of the city that non citizens can trade for supplies and find work.
The Feed Trough(ran by Ivan Marchov a Russian immigrant ) a local bar where nomads stop for a drink. Many of the citizens relax after a hard days work in the Mines and farms that surround the city.
The Scrap Heap Personal playground for the Miranda Jacobs the towns chief mechanic who trades for rare salvage.
Inner Hub Where the militia keeps guard of the supplies. Where rations are distributed.
Washington City hall is actually somewhat in tacks and that’s where the council meets to handle decision making and hold town hall meetings.

The Death run of 2024…
Last years run was the worst… in terms of survival rate. there usually a couple of people killed in the process each year. But last year only one of the three 4-10 person teams came back… the surviving team who dubbed themselves the Water Moccasins who took hiked to the Mississippi River got a boat up and running. They suffered heavy casualties leaving the city but came back with medical supplies.
It Was a harsh winter which depleted most of their supplies. Our tale begins before this years annual Run you are forming the last time that is going to make a run on gateway city. when you make your characters I want to know what they did before the devastation. Do they remember the world before?
