In the 22nd century, humanity has expanded to the entire Solar System. Out there, the people of the Asteroid Belt and the Outer Planets, known collectively as “Belters”, lead hardscrabble lives under the boot of Earth corporations and the Martian military (and are often caught in the crossfire when Earth and Mars squabble). The vastness of space is dotted with ships of all shapes and sizes, shuttling between hundreds of little stations, with cargo, passengers, tourists, and even the occasional scientist, And where there are ships, there are problems - the hazards of space include pirates, malfunctions, rogue asteroids, even basic human incompetence. Luckily, if something goes wrong on a ship, and they’re in the right part of space, and their radio works, and they’ve got enough air, the crew just might be able to call for help.
This story takes place in the universe of The Expanse, an American science fiction television series, based on The Expanse series of novels by James S. A. Corey. The series is set in a future where humanity has colonized the Solar System and follows United Nations executive Chrisjen Avasarala, police detective Josephus Miller, ship’s officer Jim Holden, his crew, and many others, as they unravel a conspiracy that threatens peace in the system and the survival of humanity. I highly recommend it. Three seasons (36 episodes total) have appeared on Space/Syfy/iTunes, and season 4 will be appearing on Amazon Prime early next year.

In our story, the Sartek corporation operates a chain of search and rescue ships that fill in the gaps (for a hefty fee) between Martian navy patrol routes and Earth bases. As our story opens, Sartek Rescue Vehicle 31 (nicknamed the Hope it flies), a small search and rescue ship, is heading out to answer a distress beacon from a lonely rock skimming the Jovian moons. The characters on board are all employees of the Sartek Corporation, working off their contracts, wondering if they’ll get their on-schedule bonus this time, and complaining about how boring their jobs are.
