The Quest
The dragon Joruzu has been reborn. The eruption of Mount Zira on the island of Guozu has triggered Joruzu’s former stone heart to hatch into an infant dragon. One alliance of heroes from each island has already traveled to Guozu to defeat the dragon before it can grow wings and wreak havoc on the surrounding islands. That alliance perished. Now you have been summoned along with four other heroes to use your magic, weapons, and animal forms to defeat Joruzu and destroy his stone heart once and for all.
But can you really trust the other heroes from different islands? Will you even make it to the final battle, or will another hero from your island need to risk their life after your death?
Background
Sajema is a tropical archipelago of over a dozen islands strategically situated between the other continents in the world of Suno. It is said to be the place where magic was born into the world, and the people of Sajema wield it far more easily than weapons.
The islanders (kesajema) all speak a common language (Cesa) and share a relatively similar culture. Since women there are thought to be more adept at wielding magic, the society has evolved to be quite matriarchal. Husbands and children take on the last name of their wives and mothers.
Each island is named for its goddess, and its people develop their magic (je) in accordance with their goddess’s domains:
Guozu: earth, stone, metalcraft (already chosen)
Tuiro: time, space (already chosen)
Zifa: fire, smoke, death (already chosen)
Muvi: growth, plants, animals (already chosen)
Juago: water, harvest, storms (already chosen)
Another important aspect of their religion is reincarnation. All of them believe that the use of magic brings them closer to their gods, transgressions lead to the continuation of the cycle of reincarnation as animals. All people of Sajema can turn into animals, but overuse of this magic is condemned since most islanders believe that humans in animal form may eventually take on the characteristics of that animal until their human soul dies. The people of Muvi, however, celebrate their animal forms and do not view these forms as weakness.
If an islander achieves great power or becomes renowned for magic, they can be cremated at great cost in the temple of Zifa. At that point, the individual is believed to have transcended reincarnation and become a goddess or god themselves.
Politically, all the islands are currently controlled by the Archmage and a council consisting of one leader from each island. Juago has held the most political sway for many generations, but Tuiro has gained considerable power over the past few decades. The current Archmage, Kajuna, has ruled for nearly two decades and has been rumored to be leaving her post soon, prompting calls for a new Archmage Tournament to determine the next leader of Sajema. But first, the islanders will all need to ban together to defeat Joruzu and reclaim the island of Guozu.
Narrator Notes
This story is my first narration and is meant to be the first in a recurring fantasy series. Characters do not need to stay the same, but the culture will be consistent. Characters will be dying frequently with the possibility of resurrection if another teammate is still alive.
I’m much more focused on building a world and a culture than character development, so I’ll be very flexible with what sort of characters everyone develops.
When creating a character, please make sure that your nature and strength match. Your weakness, the animal form, and the subplot are up to you. More animals may be acquired as they’re found throughout the story. More islands may be added for a future story, but let’s just stick to these five for now. There’s a possibility of adding new characters as heroes may die or even resurrect other dead heroes they find on their quest.
Each scene will include an action sequence with the possibility of death if the action is incomplete or there’s a negative outcome. You can use clocksoul crystals to revive teammates quickly. If you can’t make a scene, let me know and I’ll write you out of the scene that day so you don’t face death. I’ll try to write about one scene every day or so and one chapter per week.
