By decree of the Court of Frost and Holly, you are cordially invited to a masquerade held in celebration of Prince Wren Frostdale and Princess Azalea Hollingsworth’s engagment.
The court thanks you for being a contibuting civilian of the Kingdom of Ilex, and awaits you at the palace a fortnight hence. Present your invitation at the entrence upon arrival. Gifts for the matrimonials are welcome.
Be there.
Your most esteemed Monarchs,
Queen & King Frostdale + Queen & King Hollingsworth
The words stare at up you, a mockery of your past. You are far more than a contributing citizen, you know the palace intimately, spent years within its walls.
A rumour–true or not–was the cause of your exile, thrown out of the palace and forced to start again. You thought you’d never set foot there again, but clearly the Monarchs have bigger things to worry about than your presence.
Ilex, your home country, is on the brink of war with several forces that allied together. Having two family lines ruling together had always been difficult, deliberations lasted weeks, decisions were made too late. Now they’ve thrown their problems onto their heirs, arranging a union of the families in a last ditch effort to catch up and keep pace once the battles start.
Prince Wren, a melancholic soul, with the ability to manipulate the dreams of others. An air of quiet severity perpetually surrounds him, and his eyes always seem to be sizing you up, for what? No one knows.
Princess Azalea, first regarded as a failure for her lack of abilities, but later known as the palace darling. She’s helped everyone, including you, a conversation with her always restores someone’s hope in humanity. Some wonder if she secretely does have a power. Perhaps a sanguine’s ability to alter emotions, or a phlegmatic’s immunity. Notions conceived to make up for her one imperfection.
When you were banished from the castle, Azalea was the only one to say goodbye. Certainly she’s the one behind the invitation, but you can’t speak for the other letter you received, lying open on the table.
Enter the palace at your own peril. The rumour about you was no accident. Don’t trust the princess.
Best,
A friend in need.
