“I’m going somewhere, and I want you to join me. It’s a place that always seems just past our reach. A mixture of myth and reality. This place, it seems familiar, and yet it beats the heart like first times do. It’s wedged between a mix tape, a throw-away comment and a shifter. It’s going to take a lot of open road to get to .
“But open road’s all we’ve ever got, anyway.”
This is a game based on the excellent indie story game Ribbon Drive by Avery Mcdaldno. No knowledge of the original game required to play this one - it’s simple and I’ll walk you through it.
Essentially, this is a game about taking a modern day road trip with people that you share history with, under the influence of music.
Players: As it’s a GM-less game, I’ll be playing one of the characters and I’m looking for 2 other players to join me in a setting that is likely modern, and realistic.
Tone: There may be shades of comedy, but the emphasis here is on well-rounded characterisation, relationship, and collaboration. If this game succeeds, it will be because players create boldly, trust one another to build upon the fiction, and are genuinely invested in where these characters go. We’ll also be playing it close to the game’s original (light) mechanics, and avoid most of the Storium architecture.
Structure: The game will have a definite endpoint, probably around 3 chapters, of around 6-8 scenes each. However, length will also flow organically from the story, the mechanics, and the music.
Submission: Because the first part of Ribbon Drive involves collaborative character and relationship building, the submission process does not involve character creation or creating cards: we’ll work that out together once we have the right mix of people. Feel free to submit the blank template that I’ve included.
Instead, I’d like a decent sized writing sample (either something that you write for this, a Storium game you’re already in, or something else) that shows you love beautiful sentences and nuanced details. I don’t mind if it’s in PM, or in your character background.
And I’d also like a mixtape! The mixtape should be 5-8 songs, and can be a list of links on YouTube, or a Spotify playlist, or a service like 8tracks. Whatever is easiest for you.
This isn’t arbitrary: the mixtapes will help form a foundation for the kind of game we build. Make sure your mixtape, like all good mixtapes, has a name. At the risk of stating the obvious: it should be suitable music for a road trip.

Here’s the book again: “In Ribbon Drive, we create stories about letting go on the open road … Our ultimate goal is to create a thought-provoking, meaningful experience. We let the music guide us. We let the road throw us curves. We rethink our attachment to the future.”
