Once upon a time fairy tales were cautionary tales that taught valuable lessons.
Don’t go into the forest or you’ll be eaten by a wolf.
Glass slippers are practical footwear when looking for a husband.
If you wake a stranger with a kiss the two of you will live happily ever after…
Needless to say these stories don’t quite have the intended effect anymore.
Most parents would be quite happy if their children wanted to go into the now wolf free forests instead of playing video games.
Most people would take one look at the glass slipper and pick out something more practical. A six inch stiletto for example. It can double as a weapon in an emergency and is less likely to leave you picking glass out of your foot.
And anyone trying to wake a stranger with a kiss is:
- Asking to be slapped.
- In need of a lecture on consent.
- A creep to be avoided at all costs.
Stepmothers aren’t evil, the guy keeping you locked in his castle won’t magically become a prince when you fall in love Stockholm Syndrome with him and there’s a definite lack of remote, princess filled towers.
It’s time these stories were retold for the modern audience.
