The king is dead! A fortnight ago, the king died and the Red Star of legend rose in the sky again, after not having been seen in a thousand years or more. Rumors swirl about what caused the king’s death, but nobody seems to know what the crown says.
King Titus VII and Queen Alysa have five children, but none of them look much like the dead king, which has led to rumors for years about the true father. Meanwhile, peasant children that have the king’s eyes, hair, and build are growing up in brothels and courts and even tradesmen’s homes across the capital and the kingdom, for the King was ever known to have a roving eye and a lusty appetite.
The priests say the Red Star is an omen. And those unhappy with the crown whisper no true heir is in the castle. And there are strange wonders and terrors–war from without and dissent from within the kingdom are rumored; the dead are said to walk; and some students of ancient lore claim that long-inert rites and incantations are once again a source of power. Some say it’s the end of the world. Others claim it’s the dawn of a new age. But one thing is certain–the king’s blood is only the first spilled, and many more will die before anyone knows the true meaning of the Red Star’s rise.
